Good afternoon from Southern Arizona, where it’s a just-about-perfect 67 degrees outside, complemented with sunshine and a light breeze. We’ll take our business inside the confines of Tucson Arena, however.
Let’s talk some hockey.
The Roadrunners assembled for an 11:00 AM practice, getting a solid skate in between their two-game, three-night set with the Ontario Reign. The club is coming off of a 3-2 overtime loss Wednesday night; earning their first standings point since November 27’s 5-4 win over the Stockton Heat.
Tomorrow night’s contest, which is sponsored by News 4 Tucson, iHeart Media, and Aviva Children’s Services, features the team’s first-annual Teddy Bear toss. All stuffed bears thrown on the ice after the Roadrunners’ first goal of the evening will be donated to Aviva for families and children in need for the holiday season.
About 30 minutes into practice, the lights inside Tucson Arena suddenly shut-off on the team mid-drill. The players, initially hesitant, were snapped back into action when Head Coach Mark Lamb yelled, “Hey, Toronto did it! Keep going.” Lamb, of course, was referring to the Toronto Maples Leafs’ practice on November 9, in which the team skated in the dark following a power outage.
After a few dark moments, the lights returned to full power.
Welp....the lights have been turned off twice in Tucson Arena on the @RoadrunnersAHL practice. Our skate should be fun...— Ontario Reign (@ontarioreign) December 8, 2016
No changes seemed to have been made to the lines used Wednesday night. The team is still carrying three goaltenders, each of whom were on the ice today. Stefan Fournier, who suffered a mild lower-body injury Saturday night in Bakersfield, and sat out last night’s game, rejoined the team for practice, skating as an extra on the second line.
Eric Selleck partook in off-ice workouts on an exercise bike as the team skated.
The team aligned thusly:
FORWARDS (COLOR CODED):
RED: LAURENT DAUPHIN – CHRIS MUELLER – CHRISTIAN FISCHER
WHITE: GARRET ROSS – MARK OLVER – MARK COOPER – STEFAN FOURNIER
GREY: MICHAEL BUNTING – RYAN MACINNIS – CONOR GARLAND
BLUE: HUNTER FEJES – TREVOR CHEEK – LINDSAY SPARKS
JARRED TINORDI – ZBYNEK MICHALEK
DAKOTA MERMIS – JAMIE MCBAIN
KYLE WOOD – ANTHONY DEANGELO
Forward Hunter Fejes made his American Hockey League debut last night, registering two shots playing alongside Trevor Cheek and Lindsay Sparks – who were both making their debuts in Roadrunners uniforms. The trio combined for five shots Wednesday night.
The Reign were scheduled for a 1:00 PM practice. Both clubs will hold pregame morning skates ahead of Friday night’s contest.
Enjoy your Thursday; And below, a few photos from practice:
