The Roadrunners put a satisfying cap on their preseason slate Saturday in beating the San Diego Gulls 2-0, backboned by Hunter Miska’s 26-save shutout performance at the Valley View Casino Center.
Miska, assigned to Tucson Friday from the Arizona Coyotes’ training camp roster, met the team in California, where he was thrown directly into the mix, and where he made an immediate impact.
Kyle Wood gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into the contest, and moments after the team failed to capitalize on a 5-on-3 advantage, when he powered home a shot from the point to beat San Diego's Kevin Boyle.
Working with a slim lead from there on out, Miska’s stalwart play kept the Gulls’ offense at bay.
Zac Larraza, who played in 17 games with San Diego last season, capitalized on a turnover in the neutral zone late in the third period and walked in alone on the Gulls’ Angus Redmond after a nifty transition to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead with 49 seconds left in regulation.
Jens Looke registered the primary assists on both of Tucson’s goals. He had a hand in four (1G, 3A) of the Roadrunners’ five goals scored during the club’s two preseason contests.
The Roadrunners now return home to Tucson for a week of practice before opening their regular season schedule against these same San Diego Gulls on Saturday, October 7 at 7:05 PM at Tucson Arena.
