Three Straight Against Bakersfield: The Roadrunners kick-off games 48-50 with a three-game series against the Bakersfield Condors; two come at the TCC on Friday, February 23 and Saturday, February 24. The last game of the series will go back to Bakersfield that also begins a three-game road trip on Wednesday, February 28. With the season series tied at 2-2, neither team has won a home game; Tucson was swept back on October 27 and October 28, but has won the last two one-off games in Bakersfield to tie up the season series on December 22 and January 31.

Matthew Villalta recalled by the Arizona Coyotes

Tucson, Arizona- The Arizona Coyotes announced today that goaltender Matthew Villalta has been recalled to the Arizona Coyotes for his first NHL call-up of his career. Villalta becomes the 13th player who has been recalled this season from the Roadrunners to Coyotes.

The Roadrunners return to the TCC after being on the road for five-straight games with the All-Star break in the middle. That stretch of 20 days between home games is the team’s longest of the season. Forward Josh Doan and goaltender Matthew Villalta concluded their All-Star Break having helped the Western Conference win the skills competition on Sunday, February 4 and the Pacific Division win the 3-on-3 tournament on Monday, February 5. It was the second year in a row the Pacific Division won the AHL All-Star Challenge. Tucson Roadrunners Road Ahead: Hectic Home Stand Continues

The Roadrunners enter the week in first place in both the Pacific Division and Western Conference at 24-12-1-1 which is at 50 points and a .658 winning percentage. In the Pacific, Tucson has a two-point advantage over Coachella Valley (48 points) and a three-point advantage over Calgary (47 points). The Ontario Reign, who Tucson plays on Friday and Saturday at the TCC, have lost three in a row; same as the Wranglers which has given the Roadrunners and Firebirds a run for the top two spots in the Division. Only the Milwaukee Admirals are a Central Division team that is top five in the Western Conference; just one point behind Tucson at 49 but has the better win percentage (.700) with three less games played and a record of 24-10-1-0. The Texas Stars, who were in first place in the Central not long ago, have dropped five in a row and have given the Admirals a run for first. Overall, eight of the top 10 teams in the Western Conference are from the Pacific Division, with eight points separating the top six teams in the Division itself. The Roadrunners are 17-11-1-1 against the Pacific division and 7-1-0-0 against the Central division this season. In addition, defenseman Peter DiLiberatore applied eight shots on goal against the Henderson Silver Knights on Friday January 19 that ties a franchise high with single game shots from a Roadrunners defenseman. DiLiberatore becomes the fourth time for a Roadrunner defenseman to do it, joining Robbie Russo who did it twice in 2018-2019 against the Bakersfield Condors and Colorado Eagles, Trevor Murphy against the San Diego Gulls in 2018-19 and Cam Dineen last season against the San Jose Barracuda.

With game #36 coming on Wednesday against the Iowa Wild, the Roadrunners hit their halfway mark of the 72-game season. As of now the Roadrunners are well within the playoff mix and one of the top teams in the AHL. Tucson is within a point of first place with the Calgary Wranglers not only in the Pacific Division but the entire Western Conference. In the AHL the Roadrunners are currently tied at fourth place at 46 points, just two behind the second-best team the Cleveland Monsters. Dylan Guenther still leads the team in points despite being recalled to the Coyotes on January 6. He carries 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 29 games played. Josh Doan, who has been on a tear as of recent, leads Tucson in goals (15), power-play goals (6) and game-winning goals (7) and could be on pace to break or match Michael Carcone’s single-season goal total at 31. Victor Soderstrom leads Roadrunners defensemen in scoring with eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points; which is tied for 11th in the AHL by scoring from a defenseman. Defenseman Montana Onyebuchi leads the team in penalty minutes (66) and fights (6) while Tucson has been in 19 total brawls this season with Curtis Douglas (5), Travis Barron (2), Hunter Drew (2), Jan Jenik (1), Ben McCartney (1), Cam Crotty (1) and former Roadrunner Zach Sanford (1).
