THE RUNDOWN
FIRST PERIOD
The Roadrunners came out flying and opened the scoring just 2:58 into the game when forward Julian Lutz deked to his backhand and slipped the puck under the left arm of Colorado goaltender Trent Miner to take a 1–0 lead.
It didn’t last long though, as Colorado answered less than two minutes later. A seeing-eye shot from Neil Shea created a rebound that Ivan Ivan cleaned up at 5:01 to tie the game at 1–1.
Stauber shook off the early goal and kept things level with a pair of key stops throughout the period. He turned aside Tye Felhaber’s quick shot at 6:50 and slid across his crease to deny Jack Ahcan with eight minutes remaining.
Out of the penalty box, rookie Owen Allard nearly put Tucson back in front, beating the Eagles defense for a breakaway, but his shot rang off the crossbar.
Allard’s grade-A chance gave Roadrunners momentum and Tucson regained the lead late in the frame, as Michal Kunc finished his own rebound on a 2-on-1 with 2:25 left to make it 2–1, and Tucson took it’s one-goal lead into intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
Stauber picked up right where he left off to start the second and turned aside an early point-blank chance from Ahcan to preserve Tucson’s one-goal advantage. The Eagles pushed back with extended pressure in the Roadrunners’ zone, but Stauber answered a pair of looks from defenseman Bryan Yoon—gloving one cleanly at 3:21 to keep it 2–1.
Stauber delivered his biggest stop of the frame midway through the period, shutting down Ivan’s breakaway with a left-pad save at 10:19. Tucson nearly doubled its lead moments later when defenseman Maveric Lamoureux fired a heavy point shot that pinballed through traffic and caught the left post at 12:04, but Colorado goaltender Trent Miner was able to track the redirection and keep it out.
Tucson outshot Colorado for the second straight period and carried its 2–1 lead into the third.
THIRD PERIOD
Tucson opened the third period with continued pressure, highlighted by a point-blank chance from Andrew Agozzino that Colorado goaltender Trent Miner snared with his right glove in the opening minutes. The Roadrunners were handed a golden opportunity to extend their lead on a power play shortly after but were unable to generate a quality scoring chance.
At 10:25, Sammy Walker broke free for one of Tucson’s best looks of the frame, but Miner kicked out the attempt with his right pad before covering during a net-front scramble. Colorado pressed hard in the final minutes in search of the equalizer, but a forced turnover by Cameron Hebig in the neutral zone set up Ben McCartney to bury an empty-netter and put the game out of reach.
Tucson closed out a 3–1 victory to open the weekend series.
