THE RUNDOWN

FIRST PERIOD
The Roadrunners generated the game’s first shot on goal and scoring chance five minutes in when Tomas Lavoie fired a wrist shot from the point. Daniil But provided a net-front screen and jammed at the rebound before Caleb Desnoyers also joined the action with a couple of whacks at it. However, Ontario netminder Hampton Slukynsky somehow denied all three attempts to keep the game scoreless.

Despite being held without a shot through the first eight minutes, Ontario converted on its first of the night when Aatu Jämsen opened the scoring for the second consecutive day. Jämsen spun around and fired a rocket from the high slot to put the Reign ahead 1-0 at 8:08.

The Roadrunners responded immediately and didn’t allow Ontario to record another shot for more than 10 minutes, from 9:58 to 19:59. The pressure earned Tucson its first power-play opportunity after Cole Guttman was whistled for roughing with just over five minutes remaining. Tij Iginla had a pair of good looks on the man advantage, including a one-timer from the left circle that was deflected wide and a wrist shot from the slot that created a dangerous rebound opportunity for Austin Poganski. However, Tucson couldn’t convert.

Tucson generated another grade-A chance with two minutes remaining when Zac Jones raced into the Ontario zone on a two-on-one. The Roadrunners defenseman deked and caught Slukynsky in the splits but elected not to shoot, instead attempting a last-second pass to McCartney for a one-timer. Slukynsky was able to intercept the pass and keep Tucson off the board.

In the final minute, Desnoyers was assessed a double minor for high-sticking that carried over into the second period. Guttman nearly doubled Ontario’s lead with one second remaining, but Michael Hrabal made a sliding blocker save to rob him on a one-timer and keep it a one-goal game. Tucson outshot Ontario 13-5 in the opening frame.

SECOND PERIOD
The Roadrunners were hemmed into their own zone early while shorthanded for the opening 3:39 of the period. Guttman eventually got one past Hrabal on the power play with wrist shot from the left circle to make it 2-0 just 2:52 into the middle frame.

Hrabal bounced back on the next shift with a huge stop on Koehn Ziemmer, who received a pass off the rush and had a point-blank opportunity from the low right circle.

Tucson responded to its netminder’s heroics, and Ben McCartney nearly pulled the Roadrunners within one off the rush when Poganski dished a centering feed to McCartney just above the crease. However, his one-timer was turned aside by Slukynsky at the 8:30 mark.

The Roadrunners wouldn’t be denied for long, as Cameron Hebig took over and scored twice in a span of 3:43 to tie the game. First, he buried a rebound with his backhand to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 11:35. Then, after Ontario was called for too many men, Hebig converted on the power play for his second goal of the night, evening the game at 2-2 at 15:18. Hebig perfectly deflected Zac Jones’ low shot from the point past Slukynsky. Tucson outshot Ontario 12-9 in the period.

THIRD PERIOD
Tucson came out with purpose from the opening faceoff of the third period, outshooting Ontario 11-1 through the first nine minutes, and 18-7 overall in the frame.

The Roadrunners generated several quality chances during that stretch, including a one-timer from Rooney on a two-on-one opportunity set up by Yegor Borikov. However, the two would later have the last laugh.

Tucson’s sustained pressure eventually paid off as Rooney deflected home Borikov’s shot from the point to put the Roadrunners ahead 3-2 for their first lead of the night at 11:23.

McCartney had a chance to put the game out of reach on a breakaway with 2:10 remaining. Slukynsky denied his initial attempt, but McCartney collected his own rebound and circled behind the net for a wraparound attempt. The Ontario netminder shut the door again to keep it a one-goal game.

It wouldn’t matter, as the Roadrunners’ defense and Hrabal held off Ontario’s late push to secure the 3-2 victory at Toyota Arena.
