TUCSON, AZ – The Tucson Roadrunners (4-2-2-0) rode a two-goal first and third period to snap their two-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Henderson Silver Knights (4-3-0-0) on Saturday at Lee’s Family Forum.

Tucson has earned at least one point in six consecutive games and sits third in the Pacific Division with 10 points, just one point behind the first-place Colorado Eagles.

Henderson’s Trent Swick cut the deficit in half late in the first period, but after a scoreless second, Hebig restored Tucson’s two-goal advantage just under nine minutes into the third. Joshua Roy then scored on the power play for his first goal of the season, extending the Roadrunners’ lead to 4-1 with 7:04 remaining in regulation.

Assistant captain Ben McCartney recorded two assists, with his first marking his 100th career assist. Rookie Tij Iginla also tallied a pair of assists to record his first career multi-point game in the AHL.

THE RUNDOWN

FIRST PERIOD
Tucson scored twice in the opening six minutes to take an early 2-0 lead before Henderson cut the deficit in half late in the frame.

The Roadrunners wasted little time shaking off the frustration of Friday’s defeat, needing just 24 seconds to get on the board. On an odd-man rush, Austin Poganski fed Cameron Hebig for an easy tap-in goal that gave Tucson its first lead of the weekend.

Just 5:45 later, the Roadrunners capitalized on their first power-play opportunity of the night to double their lead. Caleb Desnoyers fired a hard, low shot from the right circle that deflected off Poganski and past Henderson goaltender Pavel Moysevich, giving the Roadrunners captain his first goal of the season.

Rookie defenseman Tomas Lavoie appeared to extend Tucson’s lead to 3-0 when he buried a loose rebound from the right circle midway through the frame, but the goal was immediately waved off by the officials following a net-front scrum between Tucson’s Brandon Tanev and Henderson’s Antti Tuomisto. Both players were sent to the penalty box for roughing.

Henderson took advantage of the lucky break and cut the deficit to one three minutes later instead of falling behind by three. Silver Knights forward Trent Swick deflected Adam Ginning’s wrist shot from the point past Roadrunners goaltender Jaxson Stauber with 6:45 remaining in the period to make it 2-1 heading into the second.

SECOND PERIOD
The Roadrunners carried their one-goal lead into the final frame after a scoreless second period that featured several dangerous scoring chances and power-play opportunities on both sides.

Tucson had a prime opportunity to extend its lead back to two after earning two power-play opportunities in the opening four minutes, but the Roadrunners couldn’t capitalize on either chance with the man advantage.

Henderson also had a golden opportunity to find the equalizer with a pair of power-play chances in the first half of the frame. However, like Tucson, the Silver Knights couldn’t convert with the man advantage.

Stauber was particularly sharp on the penalty kill and kept Henderson off the board with multiple clutch saves. With 8:26 remaining, he shut the door on Jackson Hallum’s point-blank chance after the Silver Knights forward drove hard to the net from the low right circle.

Moysevich also stood tall late in the frame, making a sliding pad save to deny Desnoyers’ one-timer from the right circle during Tucson’s third power play of the period with five minutes remaining.

The Roadrunners finished the period with a four-on-three man advantage and came inches away from adding another power-play goal. Desnoyers set up Poganski for a one-timer from just outside the crease, but Moysevich somehow slid across his crease in time to make the save with 90 seconds remaining, keeping Henderson within one heading into the third period.

THIRD PERIOD
Tucson came out with its hair on fire in search of the insurance goal, generating a pair of odd-man rushes in the opening five minutes. However, both Tij Iginla’s and Vadim Moroz’s one-timers on separate two-on-one rushes were turned aside by Moysevich.

Just before the six-minute mark, Sammy Walker had a good look off the rush, but his wrist shot was swallowed up by Moysevich. Linemate Brandon Tanev crashed the net looking for a rebound and got a little too close to the Henderson goaltender for the Silver Knights’ liking, sparking a scrum between both teams.

Henderson responded with some physicality of its own, and Jeremy Davies found himself with a Grade-A chance from the low slot with no traffic in front. However, Stauber came up with his biggest save of the night to preserve Tucson’s lead.

The Roadrunners corralled the rebound and quickly headed the other way on a two-on-one. Ben McCartney carried the puck into the zone before sliding a pass across the slot to Hebig, who beat Moysevich with a one-timer from the left circle to double Tucson’s lead to 3-1 at 8:40.

Just over four minutes later, the Roadrunners converted on their second power play of the evening. Joshua Roy teed up a one-timer for Iginla, who buried the opportunity from the right circle to extend Tucson’s lead to 4-1 with 7:04 remaining in regulation.

Despite holding a three-goal advantage, Tucson continued to press and controlled the play late in the third. Yegor Borikov nearly added another with a shorthanded breakaway with two minutes remaining, but Moysevich kicked his snapshot aside.

In the final minute, Tucson defenseman Montana Onyebuchi dropped the gloves for the second time this season, squaring off with Henderson’s Joe Fleming. Onyebuchi got the better of the exchange and celebrated as he headed off the ice and toward the locker room, providing a fitting finish to the Roadrunners’ victory.
