THE RUNDOWN
FIRST PERIOD
Tucson came out strong and outshot Abbotsford 6–1 through the first five and a half minutes. Sammy Walker had the game’s first dangerous scoring chance. Just over a minute in, Walker spun at the right faceoff dot and snapped a hard wrister on goal, but Canucks netminder Jiří Patera turned it aside.
The Roadrunners kept the pressure on and were rewarded when Noel Nordh opened the scoring at 9:06. Nordh carried the puck in on the rush and ripped a shot over Patera’s blocker and into the top-left corner. Kunc and Lamoureux each picked up an assist.
Nord’s line alongside Kunc and Ryan McGregor continued to drive play and spent an extended amount of time in the offensive zone with five minutes remaining. The trio cycled the puck to keep possesion in the Canucks zone for over a full minute during a dominant shift.
Abbotsford pushed back and earned a late opportunity when Tucson was called for holding with 1:20 left. The Canucks capitalized with 20 seconds remaining, as Nils Åman fired a shot from the top of the left circle and Joseph LaBate knocked in the rebound at the net front to tie the game 1–1 heading into the intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
Abbotsford carried its momentum from the late first-period goal into the middle frame and outshot Tucson 6–3 over the first three and a half minutes. However, Roadrunners goaltender Jaxson Stauber stood tall to keep the game tied.
Tucson countered four and a half minutes in, when Sammy Walker generated his second grade-A chance of the night. He snapped a shot from the right circle that beat Patera but rang off the post.
Tucson struggled to build off Walker’s scoring opportunity and the Canucks controlled play for much of the period, outshooting the Roadrunners 10–4 through the first 12 minutes.
That 10th shot put Abbotsford ahead for the first time in the series, as Dino Kambeitz buried a rebound in the low slot to make it 2–1 at 12:17.
The Canucks maintained their edge in possession in the final seven minutes thanks to having back-to-back power plays in the final five minutes. Tucson, however, killed off both penalties to remain within one heading into the third period.
THIRD PERIOD
Tucson started strong and dictated play early, but Abbotsford struck on its first shot of the period at 5:52. Danila Klimovich intercepted a breakout attempt in the Roadrunners end and created a two-on-one the other way. He held the puck looking to the puck and beating Stauber glove side to push the Canucks’ lead to 3–1.
Captain Austin Poganski generated Tucson’s best response minutes later, carrying the puck cross-ice into the Abbotsford zone, but Patera turned aside his backhand attempt to maintain the two-goal advantage.
Abbotsford added insurance just past the halfway point, as Åman released a shot from the point that slipped through traffic and found the back of the net, extending the Canucks’ lead to 4–1 with 9:50 remaining.
Then with 5:33 remaining Klimovich scored on the power play, his second goal of the night, to make it 5-1 Abbotsford.
Despite the deficit, Tucson continued to compete until the final horn. Kunc capitalized on an Abbotsford turnover in the neutral zone, scoring his third of the season to cut the deficit to 5–2 with 27 seconds remaining. Lamoureux intercepted a pass at center ice and fed Kunc in stride at the blue line, where he took a few steps and snapped a shot past Patera.
